Sport Psychology Consulting

Sport psychology consulting involves a professional relationship between a sport psychology consultant and a client. Competitive performers of all levels may receive sport psychology consulting services. The main purpose of sport psychology consulting services is to enhance performance. This service typically begins with an evaluation of problems preventing optimal performance as well as personal strengths that could enhance performance. Sport psychology consulting may also include forming relationships with parents, family members, teams, teammates, trainers, and coaches in addition to the client. Sport psychology interventions are used to help clients enhance their performance. Sport psychology consulting is not restricted to athletic performance. Musicians, dancers, show performers, and others may also benefit from sport psychology interventions for performance enhancement.

Dr. Dickens' Philosophy & Approach to Sport Psychology Consulting

Dr. Dickens mainly uses interventions shown to be effective at enhancing performance by sport psychology research. Sport psychology research demonstrates specific interventions enhance performance for groups of athletes who receive them compared to those who do not. Because everyone is a unique person in a unique situation with unique reactions, Dr. Dickens collaborates with his clients to tailor interventions to their unique needs. He seeks to establish a professional consulting relationship with his clients based on trust. For this reason, Dr. Dickens treats this professional consulting relationship as a confidential one, similar to if it was psychotherapy, which as a clinical psychologist he is also qualified to provide. He encourages clients to communicate openly about their goals, needs, and progress, and he welcomes feedback in order to make effective changes to his consulting. Sport psychology interventions are not guaranteed to enhance performance, but Dr. Dickens makes every effort to help his clients meet their individual goals and needs in order to make meaningful and significant progress, to enhance quality of life, and to promote personal growth.
